Sri Lanka's Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that the government's actions in the human rights front within the country are a contradiction to statements made to the international community.
JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath told a press conference that
although the government speaks of protecting human rights to the international community, it has not happened. "Pseudo patriotism has been pushed by politicians to try to win the people," he observed. He said the fate that has befallen the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka was the best example for the government's commitment to protecting human rights in the country. He noted that a commissioner who worked voluntarily at the Commission had resigned due to undue political interference in the Commission's affairs and the inability to carry out his work. "The institutions that have been established to protect law and order in the country have been destabilized by political thuggery by the political mafia that is engaged in abductions, extortions and murders," Herath said. He added that the crime rate has seen a drastic increase and there was no use in the government's pseudo patriotism. Herath pointed out that it was time to defeat the existing situation in the country before it could get any worse.
