The former Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP), Karu Jayasuriya has called on the government to explain its official stance with regard to the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).
Jayasuriya has asked the government to state its official stance on the LLRC and the implementation of its recommendations given the contradictory statements made by government ministers.
He has explained that while Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has assured the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva of the government's intention to implement the LLRC recommendations, member of the government delegation to Geneva, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has been quoted in a press interview saying the government has not agreed to implement the recommendations. "The government therefore needs to state its proper official position on the matter," Jayasuriya has said. He has also called on the people to express their objections to the deterioration of the law and order situation in the country since they would otherwise be aiding and abetting in the early demise of the rule of law.
