Sri Lanka major opposition to decline candidature for 80 councilors on disciplinary grounds

Sri Lanka's major opposition United National Party (UNP) has decided to reject nominations for 80 representatives of the present local councils at the upcoming local government election.

These councilors are accused of violating party discipline, supporting the ruling party and inactivity in politics in the past few years.

Disciplinary inquiries against these councilors have been completed and reports have been submitted to the party leadership, UNP sources say.
Second round interviews for the selection of candidates of the UNP for the local government election are to be held at the first week of November.
