Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said that time was running out for democracy in the country with even some opposition parties deciding to support the government.
The JVP said the government's move to introduce constitutional amendments would create a dictatorship in the country.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva addressing a gathering opposite the Fort Railway station where the party launched a leaflet distribution campaign today to create awareness among the public about the constitutional amendments said the proposal to remove the two-term limit on the Executive President would consolidate the power base of one family.
Silva said the amendments would also minimize chances of holding free and fair elections in the country in future.
