Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has ordered the military and Police to take legal action against any individual who uses names of senior military personnel on false stories for personal political gains.
A special statement on this was released on Friday (23). The statement issued by Military Spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara from the Media Center for National Security states personnel in active military duties could not participate in political activities.
The statement said that Section 20 of the gazette extraordinary clearly lays down the punishment that can be meted out under the emergency regulations to those who are engaged in such activities.
This section basically stipulates that if any person or persons or media publish news which are aimed at inciting the public against the State or create public resentment against the implementation of the laws, or provokes rebellion against authority, legal action can be taken against all those who are directly and indirectly involved in such provocative activities.
Personnel involved in active military service have been prohibited from being engaged in political activities and the usage of names of senior military personnel in false stories for personal political gains has been deemed illegal.
The government has emphasized the need for immediately stopping the use of names of military personnel in various propaganda activities and that legal action would be instituted against any group or individual who fails to abide by the regulation.
The Defence Secretary has issued orders for the immediate implementation of the regulation.
