The Irida Lanka newspaper has carried a lead story and launched a poster campaign stating several key figures in the government have launched an operation to entice General Sarath Fonseka.
The news report quoting government sources states that the comment made by a key figure in the government of his decision to resign from parliament was in line with the operation.
However, the operation failed when the anticipated common candidate at the next Presidential election General Fonseka rejected to accept the seta in parliament that was to be
vacant following the resignation of the key government figure.
The story also states that the next step in the plan is to appoint General Fonseka as a Defence Advisor to either the US or UK and many key government figures are directly involved in securing the General such a post. However, it is also reported that the government would come up with an alternative arrangement if General Fonseka rejected this appointment as well.
A group of diplomats who have served and are currently serving in Western nations and Europe along with several advocates are preparing the necessary ground work for the purpose, it is also stated.
The story further quotes a reliable source who had said a key government figure has already requested the support of a Sri Lankan VIP residing in London to carry out the operation. The respective VIP earlier played a key role in pushing former President Chandrika Kumaratunge into politics.
