Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the government's ignorance in dealing with matters related to the education sector has inconvenienced the student population, especially last year's GCE Advanced level students.
UNP parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told a news conference today that
the government had ignored when the UNP had warned about issues related to the Z-scores. He observed that the government's failure has left many students uncertain about their future. The MP called on the government to grant university admission to all students who have qualified for university entrance under the old and new Z-scores since students should not be allowed to suffer due to the mistakes of the authorities. According to Kariyawasam, the government needs to do justice by the students regardless of who intervenes. He further noted that Higher Education Minister needs to resolve the issue while the government should reveal the procedure adopted to calculate the new Z-scores. Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne in response to the MP's comment has said that the Z-score was recalculated according to the formula provided by the Supreme Court and if necessary, the Minister of Higher Education is able to disclose the calculations. Navaratne has reiterated that as instructed by the President, the Ministry is prepared to grant maximum fairness to any student affected by the recalculation of the Z-score.
