Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha, who presented credentials as new Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva last week has urged the UN not to allow overseas-based rump elements of the defeated Tamil Tiger terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and some Tamil diaspora groups to "'hijack multilateral processes" to serve their narrow agendas. He has affirmed Sri Lanka's deep commitment to the UN multilateral system and expressed his firm intention to undertake a multi-faceted dialogue with the UN and its mechanisms in Geneva. Sri Lanka's experience in fields such as disarmament and intellectual property and the humanitarian affairs could provide useful insights to the UN mechanisms, the Ambassador has noted. "As Sri Lanka was committed to the respectful engagement with the UN system, reciprocally there was also need on the part of all of Sri Lanka's interlocutors to appreciate the difficult tasks that had been achieved by the government over the past three years since the defeating of LTTE (Tamil Tiger) terrorism," he has said. Welcoming Ambassador Aryasinha, Director General of UN office in Geneva, Jomart Tokayevhas said that Sri Lanka has a long standing relationship with the UN, and had over the years played an important role engaging with the UN's many institutions and mechanisms. Ambassador Aryasinha replaced former Permanent Representative Ms. Tamara Kunanayakam who has been posted to the Sri Lankan mission in Havana, Cuba.
