Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said the removal of the emergency regulations alone would not establish democracy in the country, as a lot more needs to be done on the part of the government.
JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a press conference that law and order needed to be established in the country.
"There is no democracy in a country that does not have law and order," he said.
Dissanayake observed that there were many measures the government had to adopt in order to guarantee law and order in the country.
Citing one example, he said that the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) has given undue powers to the military and the Defence Secretary.
According to Dissanayake, the government had decided to remove emergency regulations 16 days after the regulations were passed in parliament for a period of one month.
He questioned as to how the reasons given for the extension of emergency regulations earlier in the month are invalid two weeks later.
