Sri Lanka's main opposition to discuss leadership issue at next Working Committee meeting

Deputy leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Sajith Premadasa says the party's Working Committee (WC) has not met since May 03 this year.

Premadasa made this comment to ColomboPage when asked about the next step planned by the pro-reforms group following the invitation extended to deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya last week to take over the party leadership.

Premadasa said the pro-reforms group has once again initiated a process to salvage the party from its current path to deterioration and the invitation extended to Jayasuriya to accept the party leadership was part of the process.

However, he said that they would have to wait to raise the issue at the respective forums of the party.

"The WC has not met for a long time and we do not know when the next meeting would be. The issue would have to be raised at that forum," Premadasa said.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake meanwhile confirmed to ColomboPage that the party's WC had not met since May due to various reasons. He said the WC could not meet due to elections and since the party leader was away on two overseas tours.

He added that the UNP Constitution did not stipulate a time frame for the WC to meet.

Attanayake noted that the failure to specify the frequency of WC meetings was a shortcoming in the party Constitution.

He said the next WC meeting is scheduled for August 17.

However, Attanayake said the WC might still be summoned earlier than the set date after the party leader returns to the country since he has the mandate to summon the Committee.
