Sri Lanka major Tamil party accuses Army of disrupting its election meeting in Jaffna

Sri Lanka's major Tamil political party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has said the Army had used excessive force at an election rally organized by the party in Jaffna Thursday night.
TNA parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah has told the media that over 100 soldiers had entered the Alawetti College in Jaffna where the meeting was being held.

He has said that the army soldiers after saying the party could not hold a meeting at the venue had forcibly removed the microphones and the police bodyguards of the TNA MPs who had intervened had been assaulted along with the people at the meeting.

The TNA has lodged a complaint with the Thellipalai police while also informing the Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe about the incident.

According to Senathirajah, several people who had participated at the event were injured due to the attack.

However, military spokesman Major General Ubhaya Madawela has said that he was not aware of such an incident.

The TNA had organized the meeting to introduce the party's candidates for the forthcoming local government elections in Jaffna.
