Inmates protest on the prison roof in north central Sri Lanka

A group of prisoners in a Sri Lankan prison Monday launched a protest fast on the roof of the prison.

A group of about 20 prisoners have commenced a protest fast on the roof of the Anuradhapura prison against several court decisions that have been issued with regard to their bail applications.

Prisons Commissioner Major General V.R. De Silva has told the local media that the prisoners were protesting against a regulation where it states that a government employee drawing a salary over Rs. 15,000 had to sign for their bail.

It is learnt that most of the protesting prisoners have been granted bail by court, but remained in prison due to their inability to fulfill this regulation.
