Sri Lanka opposition party asks whether Fonseka will be allowed to meet the UN Panel

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today asked whether former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance leader Sarath Fonseka would be allowed to meet the UN Secretary-General's Panel of Experts when it visits the country.

UNP parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella told a press conference that since the government has said it was willing to make the necessary arrangements for the Panel to visit Sri Lanka, the government would also have to decide whether the Panel could meet with Fonseka.

Kiriella observed that the government should make a firm decision on the matter.

Fonseka who led the Sri Lankan Army to eliminate the Tamil Tiger rebels has on several occasions expressed his readiness to answer any international panel without bringing any harm to the country or the security forces about the war against terrorism that ended last year.
