Sri Lanka's Public Utilities Commission says electricity tariffs will be increased in January.
Head of the Commission Damitha Kumarasinghe told the media that tariffs will be increased to offset the withdrawal of the subsidy provided by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
The Commission will announce the proposed rates on November 29 for the public to make their comments.
Kumarasinghe has been quoted as saying that the Commission is considering additional rates for householders using more than 300 units a month.
However, the final decision will be made after hearing the public's comments. The public will be given two weeks to give their views and the Commission says it hopes to have a public hearing at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on December 15 before finalizing the new rates.
