Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Hambantota District MP Sajith Premadasa says a vote must be taken to elect a new leader for the main opposition United National Party (UNP). Joining the UNP's Grama Charika grassroots campaign today in Kundasale, Premadasa has said
the current leader cannot remain in the party for life. "All this time the leader of the United National Party remained in that capacity for life. But what does the new constitution say? No one can remain at the helm of the party leadership for life. It says that a consensus must be reached or else a vote must be taken to elect persons for the post of leader and four other posts," he has said.
Premadasa today participated in the Grama Charika program at Sri Deerananda Viharaya, Kundasale distributing funds to help develop local temples and villages under the Sasunata Aruna program.
UNP party leaders Lakshman Kiriella , Gayantha Karunatileka, Buddhika Pathirana, Ashok Abeysinghe, Dunesh Gankanda, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Thalatha Atukorale and Tissa Attanayake also participated in the event.
