Sri Lanka's former Army Commander back to prison cell

Sri Lankan prison authorities have returned former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leader Sarath Fonseka back to his prison cell from the hospital today.

Commissioner General of Prisons, Major General V.R. De Silva has told the media that Fonseka was returned to his cell from the Welikada Prison Hospital due to the improvement in his health.

Fonseka was admitted to the Prison Hospital due to a sudden illness on Tuesday night following his court appearance for two cases against him.

The Colombo High Court Thursday ordered the prison officials to provide better prison conditions and necessary facilities to exercise.

The former Army commander who led the Army against Tamil Tiger rebels was sentenced last month to a 30-month jail term in the Welikada high-security prison after he was found guilty by a court martial for alleged irregularities in military procurements during his tenure as Army Chief.
