Sri Lanka sprint queen to return to competition

Sri Lankan sprint queen and Olympic silver medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe announced today that she would re-enter competition.


The 35-year-old athlete said that she would commence practicing next month.

She expressed ambition of winning a gold medal for 100 meters at the next Asian Games. Her personal best timing of 11.04 seconds for the event is very close to the best at Asian Games.

Susanthika who won a silver medal at 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, holds the national record for women's 100 meters.

Jayasinghe announced her retirement from sports on February 5, 2009 in order to focus on raising a family. She contested the April 2010 parliamentary elections from the ruling party but did not win a seat.
