Marxist party supporters protesting in Jaffna taken away by Sri Lanka police

Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that a group of party supporters including students from the Rajarata University who went to Jaffna Monday to participate in a signature collection campaign has been taken in for questioning by the Jaffna police.

JVP Propaganda Secretary, parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told the media that the students had traveled to Jaffna to participate in the campaign organized by the 'We are Sri Lankans' movement to urge the government to ensure the safety of Tamil detainees and to reveal their names.

The Rajarata University Students' Council Vice President N.H.P.D. Navaratne has told the media that the students were taken away by the police when they were conducting the campaign this afternoon to collect signatures of the general public.

A similar protest was held in Colombo last month.

Meanwhile, the Jaffna SSP Neville Padmadeva has told the Ada Derana that the Jaffna police had taken the protesters for questioning only and they have been released.
