Suspected child kidnapper shot dead by Sri Lankan Police

The Sri Lankan Police have shot and injured the main suspect of a child kidnapping incident in the area of Sapugaskanda when he had attempted to throw a hand grenade at police officers. The suspect has succumbed to his injuries later.

Police Spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody has told the local media that the suspect was shot at when he had attempted to throw a hand grenade at police officers.
According to the police, the shooting had taken place in the Kadawatha area when the suspect following his arrest had accompanied several police officers to reveal a location where he had allegedly buried a batch of grenades.
A 9-year-old child was abducted on August 31 in Sapugaskanda and was later found alive by police in the vicinity of Thalathuoya, Kandy.
The child told the police that his abductors threw him into the Victoria Reservoir but he got entangled in a tree and escaped.
According to the complaint lodged at the Sapugaskanda police by the child's father, the kidnapper had demanded a ransom of Rs.800,000 for the safe return of the child.
