Indian Army Chief to visit Sri Lanka

The Chief of Indian Army General V. K. Singh is to arrive in Sri Lanka on Sunday (05) on a five-day official visit, Indian media reported.
During his visit, General Singh is scheduled to meet Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, his Sri Lankan counterpart Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and other senior defence officials.
Reportedly the visiting military leader will be here to discuss defence cooperation aiming to strengthen bilateral military ties between the two neighbors.

The General, who has led the war against LTTE in "Operation Pawan" to capture Jaffna from LTTE in late 1987 as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force, is scheduled to visit Vavuniya in the war-torn North.

His visit comes in the wake of India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao's three-day visit to the island on Monday (August 30).

During her visit Ms. Rao visited the Tamil heartland in the North and observed the resettlement process of the displaced civilians.

Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna is also scheduled to visit the country in October to inaugurate consulates in Hambantota and Jaffna and attend the India-Lanka joint commission meeting, Indian media reported.
