Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued a common pardon today to 1,312 prisoners including 37 females to mark Prisoners' Welfare Day.
Commissioner General of Prisons, Major General V.R. de Silva has told the local media that the group of pardoned prisoners was from prisons island-wide consisting of a cross section of persons serving varying lengths of imprisonment for various offences.
A majority of inmates who had been released were reportedly in prison for being unable to pay fines imposed on them by the courts and inmates who are more than 70 years old.
Meanwhile, an official ceremony to mark the Prisoners' Day will be held on Tuesday under the patronage of the Sri Lankan President.
