The famous south Indian playback singer, Swarnlatha passed away at a private hospital in Chennai. The reason for her untimely death is cited to lung infection. She was just 37 years old.
Swarnlatha was born in Palakkad district of Kerala in 1973. She inherited her interest in music from her parents. Her father, K.C. Cherykutty, was a good harmonium player and singer while her mother, kalyani, also had interest in music. Swarnalatha was also trained in harmonium and keyboard along with singing. Swarnlatha has her education from Shimoga.
She was a noted singer and lent her voice to numerous songs in various languages. She has sung songs in languages that include Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam. She had been singing since 1989 and had carved a niche for herself in playback singing.
Swarnlatha has won national Film Award for Best Playback Singer in 1995 for her song ‘Porale Ponnuthayi’. The song was composed by legendry composer A.R. Rahman for Tamil film ‘Karuththamma’.
Late Ms. Swarnalatha also worked as professional dubbing artiste. She is survived by parents, K. C. Cherukutty and Kalyani.
Entire music fraternity is shocked over the untimely demise of Swarnlatha. The playback singer and music director M G Sreekumar expressed his shock over her death and said that it was a loss to Indian film music.
