The total number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Menik Farm relief camp has dropped to 28,659 as of today, the Sri Lankan government reported.
The Chief Coordinating Officer of the Competent Office for IDPs in Vavuniya, Colonel Vadugodapitiya has been quoted as saying that only 58 IDPs remain in Jaffna and that they will be resettled in a few days.
The resettlement of the 58 IDPS this week is to complete the resettlement programme in Jaffna.
Colonel Vadugodapitiya has said that two more batches of 700 and 200 IDPs from Menik Farm will be resettled in Kilinochchi, Pachchilaipalli on the 14th and 18th of this month respectively.
In addition, 3,650 IDPs who were with host families are to be resettled in their places of origin by the 18th of this month.
Accordingly, 1,200 IDPs are to be resettled in Kilinochchi, Karachchi on September 4 and another 1,200 IDPs will be resettled in the same area on the 11th.
The government provide dry rations for a period of six months to families resettled until they find livelihood assistance in addition to an initial payment of Rs 25,000 at the time of resettlement.
