Sri Lankan university lecturers of postpone union action till September 7

Sri Lankan university lecturers who were planning not to report for work tomorrow (30) if the government failed to address their salary issue by then, have postponed the trade union action till September 7.

The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) has said the decision to postpone the trade union action was taken following a request by the government for more time to resolve the wage issue.
FUTA Assistant Secretary, Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri has told the local media today that Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga had previously assured to provide a solution by August 25. However, upon being reminded of the deadline set out by FUTA, Weeratunga had reportedly requested for seven more days to resolve the matter.
According to Dr. Devasiri, the union has decided to postpone the union action until September 7 following Weeratunga's request.
However, the university lecturers are to launch an island wide protest on September 2 to impress upon the government the urgency to address the university lecturers' wage issue.
