SLMC open for discussions on extending further support to the government

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has said the party was open for further discussions on supporting the government on issues other than the proposed constitutional amendments. The SLMC has said it would do so if there was a request by party members.

The SLMC High Command on Friday decided to extend the party's support to the government's proposed constitutional amendments while sitting in the opposition benches.

The SLMC decision has helped the government to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament.
Party Chairman Basheer Segu Dawood has said the party has so far not made any decision to join the government.
However, Segu Dawood has said the SLMC was open for discussion on other issues if there was a request from party members.
"Other issues have not been discussed. The decision to support the government on the constitutional amendments is a first step," he has said.
