A research team from Moratuwa University has submitted a report regarding the condition of the bridges on the Colombo ' Matara Expressway and in accordance with it, three bridges have been demolished and reconstructed.
Twenty-eight more bridges are needed to be completely overhauled and reinforced, according to the recommendation of the report.
These facts were revealed to media by the Project Director of Southern Expressway S. Mehandan.
The engineering experts of Moratuwa University tested 73 bridges from Godagama in Matara to Kurundugahahethepma.
Sri Lanka government expects to complete the 126 km highway by December 2011 and it is scheduled to open in 2012. The project costing 600 million dollars started in 2006. It is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
