Sri Lanka's Marxist party rejects IGP's claim of student union member killing Ruhuna University student

Sri Lanka's Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today rejected claims made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) that the death of a Ruhunu University student last Thursday (22) night was due to severe head injuries received from an assault by a student union member of the JVP.

JVP politburo member and DNA parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a press briefing today (25) that the charges raised by the IGP about the Ruhunu University student being killed by a JVP student union member were false.
Dissanayake said that the police have so far contradicted its own statement regarding the death of the 25-year-old student Susantha Aruna Bandara.
He said the police after first saying that Bandara had died of natural causes have now changed their stance and claim he was killed.
According to the medical report the student had died of a brain aneurism after being hospitalized for an extended period following the assault.
The JVP affiliated Inter University Students' Federation accused the police of the alleged assault.
The police, acting on a complaint made by the mother of the victim that another student had assaulted her son, said they have identified a suspect, a fellow university student who is a JVP activist.
The suspected student identified as Basnayake, from the Uva Paranagama area had gone missing from his home, the police said.

Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday ordered a full probe into the death of the student.
