Sri Lanka's defense authorities have given civil administration in the North permission to resettle displaced civilians in the High Security Zones of Jaffna, the Jaffna Government Agent K. Ganesh said.
The GA said the resettlement soon to be commenced will be carried out in stages. The civil authorities will take prompt measures to provide facilities to continue the resettled IDPs with their livelihoods, he added.
The civilians had been displaced for along time due to the setting up of High Security Zones by Sri Lanka's military in the region during the war with the LTTE.
The HSZ areas include Palaly, Madagal, Chankanai, Ariyalai, Colombuthurai, Tanankilappu, Nagarkovil and Tellippalai in Jaffna district.
Removal of HSZs is a demand regularly brought up by opposition Tamil political parties and the security forces have finally agreed to open up some of the HSZs for resettlement after discussions with civil administration officials.
