Over 300 former child soldiers of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) will be taking the GCE advanced Level exam August, Sri Lanka Defence Ministry said today.
Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe has said that the government has identified 594 students from the government- run and 378 of them are being prepared to take the GCE (A/L) examination in coming August.
The students who are not taking the exam will be released after rehabilitation, Brigadier Ranasinghe has said.
According to Commissioner General, the LTTE had disrupted the education of these ex-combatants
The military, with the assistance of the Education Ministry had conducted a special school within the premises of Vavuniya Tamil Primary school for those A/L students whose education had been disrupted by the LTTE by forcibly recruiting them into its fighting units, the Commissioner General revealed.
The military had met all their needs including books, stationery, tuition, food, and lodging, Brigadier Ranasinghe said.
According to the Defence Ministry authorities, the military had identified 11,800 ex-LTTE cadres for rehabilitation from the IDP camps and 152 university students among them have been sent to the Jaffna University.
About 3,000 former LTTE cadres were released after rehabilitation and some of them were employed in the private sector, the Defence Ministry noted.
