Rains wreak havoc in Sri Lanka

Torrential monsoon rains lashing Sri Lanka for the last few days are causing misery for thousands of people throughout the country. According to the Disaster Management Center more than 100,000 families are affected in 11 districts and four deaths have been reported.



Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed officials to provide relief to the affected people. The government has allocated three million rupees to district secretaries for relief work.
The Sri Lankan Navy has deployed life saving squads to rescue stranded people in various areas.
Colombo, Gampaha, and Kaluthara districts were the most affected areas. Many roads including Colombo highways were inundated causing road closure and heavy traffic congestions. Colombo Municipal Council Chief Engineer said that the flow of water is beyond the capacity of drainage channels.
In Colombo district, 12,000 families were affected according to National Disaster Management Center. In Gampaha, 15,065 families are affected in Gampaha.
Colombo ? Kandy highway was also inundated near Balummahara in Gampaha district.
Three youth who went swimming in floods have drowned and one body has been recovered.
In Kalutara district 13,000 families have been affected due to the spill-over from Kalu Ganga (river) inundating some low-lying areas. Some areas in the district are under landslide threats. Spill gates of Kukuleganga reservoir have been opened causing floods in lowlands.
Ratnapura district is not affected by floods yet. Gin Ganga in Southern Province Galle district is near spilling. Landslide threats and road closures were reported from that district too.
Ratmalana and Colombo received highest rainfall in the past 24 hours according to Meteorology Department. More rains are anticipated in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces.
