Marxist student union accuses Sri Lanka higher education authority of breaching court order

Sri Lanka's Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna affiliated Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) has accused the higher education authority, University Grants Commission (UGC) of breaching a court order.

IUSF Convener Udul Premarathne yesterday (21) charged that the UGC breached the court order, that stated to consult all concerned parties in connection to the reduction of the Allied Health Sciences (AHS) degree from four to three years, when it only consulted the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) and not any other parties concerned.
"They said that they had spoken to all parties involved but that's not true. They didn't speak to the student bodies or the other trade unions," Premaratne told the media.
He also said there was a demand for 40,000 nurses but only 20,000 nurses are graduating from nursing schools due to the decision to close two of the 14 nursing training centers with three more slated to be closed.
