Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa yesterday (21) has told the Central Environment Authority (CEA) employees that the uncontrolled and unplanned use and abuse of natural resources under the pretext of development has to end, as developing countries are continuing to be severely impacted by its negative effects.
He has said that the international community was paying a lot of attention to safeguarding a valuable resource such as the environment because the very existence of mankind depends on it.
"The seriousness of global pollution can be gauged by looking closely at the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted into the atmosphere mainly by industrialized countries. For instance, China has emitted a massive 6,103,493,000 metric tons of CO2 in 2006 at the per capita rate of 4.62 metric tons while the United States the second highest emitter of CO2 with an equally massive 5,752,289,000 metric tons at a per capita rate of 18.99 metric tons. These two large nations are collectively responsible for nearly 42% of the world's total CO2 emission. This kind of abuse is quite a challenge to all those who are genuinely interested in protecting the environment," Minister Yapa has explained.
According to Yapa, this is the gravest crisis faced collectively and individually by the world community.
