Senior ministers oppose Mervyn’s move to obstruct the General’s religious rituals

Several senior ministers had called Temple Trees and requested the officials to inform the President not to permit the likes of Mervyn Silva to get his drunk supporters to shout and disrupt the religious rituals observed by General Sarath Fonseka at the Kelani Rajamaha Vihara. The ministers had made the calls after seeing the ugly actions of Mervyn’s supporters at the temple when it was telecast on television channels last night.

Sources from Temple Trees said a massive number of phone calls objecting to the actions of Mervyn Silva’s supporters had started coming in



to Temple Trees after Sirasa TV telecast the incident.

A Coordinating Secretary of Mervyn Silva when inquired said the decision to disrupt the religious observances was made following a Presidential directive. However, several men carrying the Lion flag who were present at the scene of the incident were attacked by Mervyn’s thugs when they started to shout “Jaya wewa to the future President.”

Mervyn warns General Fonseka that military chiefs should not overstep their limits

Labor Minister Mervyn Silva says it was the President and the Defence Secretary who steered the forces to win the war against the LTTE and forces chiefs who are trying to take personal credit for the task should therefore not overstep their limits.

The Minister made this statement at a meeting held yesterday to mark the opening of a road development project in Dematagoda. Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunge also attended the meeting organized by Western Provincial Councilor Thilanga Sumathipala.

that was made popular and it was his name that went down in history. That was because the battles were planned and strategies were formed by King Dutugemunu and the giants simply carried out the king’s orders.

“This time we fought against the LTTE. It was the President and the Defence Secretary who planned the battle and gave leadership to it. The forces chiefs simply carried out the orders.

“It is in this backdrop that some forces chiefs think that the war was won because of them. They are trying hard to take credit for it. I’m firmly telling these people not to overstep their limits. If these officials perform their duties knowing their true position they will be able to win the respect of the people. If they allow to be misled by opposition politicians and act accordingly, then we will be compelled to release details about their inside dealings. I ask these forces chiefs not to create such a scenario.”
