
Sri Lanka naval men are once again accused of attacking Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and damaging heir equipment when they were fishing in Sri Lankan waters near Katchatheevu islet.
Twenty Tamil Nadu fishermen were allegedly assaulted Tuesday morning by Sri Lankan navy personnel when they were fishing near Katchatheevu islet, Tamil Nadu fishery officials have said.
According to the officials, the Sri Lanka navy men have surrounded the fishermen's boats beaten them up and taken away the GPS equipment. They have also alleged of cutting the fishing nets and throwing their catch into the sea.
Large scale illegal poaching by Indian fishermen mainly from Tamil Nadu with trawlers in Sri Lanka's waters has become a serious threat to the livelihoods of Sri Lankan fishermen.
Sri Lanka Navy says it conducts routine patrols and apprehends poachers detected illegally fishing in Sri Lankan Waters in order to protect the country's fisheries resources.
