US expects a full account on alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka

The United States Tuesday reiterated that it is deeply concerned by allegations of violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in Sri Lanka.
Responding to a query on the latest report by Britain's Channel 4 on the killing of 12-year-old son of LTTE leader by the Sri Lankan army, the U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Victoria Nuland said the U.S. expects a full account on all those responsible for human rights and humanitarian law violations in Sri Lanka. "We continue to be deeply concerned by allegations of violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in Sri Lanka. At the end of this conflict, we support a full accounting for all who are engaged in acts of violated international humanitarian law," Nuland said. The U.S. also welcomes the report by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay which expressed strong concern over Sri Lankan government's lack of action to address the longstanding issues of reconciliation and accountability, the spokesperson said. The State Department spokesperson confirmed that the U.S. plans to introduce its own resolution on this issue into the Human Rights Council. The U.S. has decided to sponsor a procedural resolution with its international partners against Sri Lanka at the March 2013 sessions of the UNHRC.
