Sri Lanka exporting maize is a people's victory - Minister

Economic Development Minister of Sri Lanka Basil Rajapaksa says that the exporting of maize to Canada and Taiwan was a victory achieved by the people. Rajapaksa addressing an event in Peliyagoda has said
the country has commenced exporting maize since the government has managed to make the country self-sufficient in rice and maize through its fertilizer subsidy programme to farmers. He said Sri Lanka is now exporting 10,000 metric tons of maize, a commodity which was earlier imported to the country. According to Rajapaksa, the exporting of maize would help save foreign exchange in the country and it would be used to strengthen the agriculture sector. The Minister has noted that the government would take steps to import hybrid seeds in order to increase the local yield. He has pointed out that the production of maize in the country has exceeded production targets.
