Main opposition party of Sri Lanka to announce its stance on the parliamentary select committee today

The United National Party (UNP), main opposition party of Sri Lanka will today express its stance on the parliamentary select committee (PSC) appointed to find a solution to the ethnic problem, party sources said.
The UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe will reveal the party's stance today when he makes a special statement in the parliament today. Following the response to the UNP regarding the parliamentary select committee, the major Tamil constituent, Tamil National Alliance is also expected to announce its stance. The UNP earlier said that it will extend its full support to the PSC proposed by the government to formulate a political solution to address the ethnic issue if the government showed its commitment to the process and creates a conducive environment. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has said that a political solution based on safeguarding the country's identity is needed and the party is prepared to support the PSC process to achieve that. The opposition party has urged the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to include the Tamil National Alliance, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and other opposition parties in the PSC process if it were to have fruitful outcome. UNP has expressed its willingness to extend the necessary support to seek the participation of Tamil political parties in the parliamentary select committee and to support the process.
