Sri Lanka's major Tamil political party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) says the failures of successive governments to find a political solution to the ethnic issue has compelled the party to seek international assistance for the matter.
TNA Leader, R. Sampanthan said
the party has been trying to find a political settlement locally until January this year. Addressing the ceremony organized by his party to commemorate the late Federal Party Leader S. J. V. Chellvanayagam at the Kathiresan Hall, Sampanthan observed that there has not been any favorable response from the government. He explained that although the TNA were engaged in seven rounds of talks with the present government, the latter has not responded to their request for an acceptable political solution. He pointed out that the present government had failed to deliver although assurances have been given since 2006. According to Sampanthan, the government has failed to respond positively for a solution based on a united Sri Lanka. He noted that the government has cast aside the APRC committee's proposals and the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) for an accepted solution for the national issue with maximum devolution.
