Political solution for Sri Lanka only through parliamentary select committee, government reiterates

The Sri Lankan government today reiterated its stance that a clear solution to the power devolution issue could only be provided through a parliamentary select committee (PSC) and urged the main Tamil party,
Tamil national Alliance (TNA) to join the process. During a meeting with the visiting Indian parliamentary delegation led by the opposition leader of Indian parliament Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, the leader of the TNA, R. Sampanthan has insisted that a solution to the Tamil question will only be possible with foreign involvement as the talks with the government for over a year have not produced any results. The TNA is obliged to participate in the parliamentary select committee discussions and the President has appointed a Committee to create a platform for discussions, Acting Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today at the weekly cabinet briefing. The Minister stressed that it is compulsory to find a solution that can satisfy all stakeholders and therefore, the TNA should put forward its request to the parliamentary select committee instead of making statements locally and internationally. Abeywardena pointed out that TNA is not the only political party which represents the community in the North. "Therefore after having lengthy discussion at the parliamentary select committee the decision should be approved in the parliament with two-third majority. Recommendations of all party conference could also be discussed at the parliamentary select committee," the Minister emphasized. During the meeting with the Indian delegation, Sampanthan has agreed with the Indian stance that any solution to the ethnic issue must be within a unitary Sri Lanka but has complained that the government is moving lethargically on the power devolution process. The Indian delegation has assured the TNA that they would stress the need for devolution of powers to the Northern and Eastern provinces with President Mahinda Rajapaksa when they meet him on Saturday.
