Indian Foreign Secretary to arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow to discuss fishermen issue

Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao is to arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow (29) to discuss the alleged killing of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lanka Navy, the Indian media has reported.

"Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has asked the Foreign Secretary to go to Sri Lanka tomorrow to discuss the killing of Indian fishermen with the government there," the Indian media quoting sources said.

The Foreign Secretary is expected to take up the fishermen issue with Colombo and also would call for a meeting of the joint working group on fisheries to find a solution to the issue.

The Sri Lankan government has vehemently denied that its navy was involved in the fishermen's killings and asked the Indian government to provide more information on the incidents through diplomatic channels.

With more Sri Lankan fishermen from the North and East returning to fishing following the end of the war, the presence of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters has raised opportunity for more confrontations between the two groups.
