Governing party members of the Sri Lankan parliament today handed in a motion to the Speaker requesting for the appointment of a select committee to probe into main opposition United National Party (UNP) legislator Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena.
The motion was signed by 78 governing party members and has called for a select committee to probe Dr. Jayawardena's alleged involvement in anti-government protests in the UK.
The select committee is to investigate whether Dr. Jayawardena has violated the oath taken by legislators, in which they pledge not to support any act that would promote separatism.
The opposition legislator is alleged of instigating pro-LTTE protests in London that led to the Oxford Union to cancel President Mahinda Rajapaksa's speech last week.
