A group of war veterans of Sri Lanka today staged a protest calling for the release of former Army commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leader Sarath Fonseka from prison.
The group 'War Heroes for the General' including disabled veterans marched in Colombo downtown shouting slogans through loudspeakers and carrying placards that read "Free the General who saved the country".
Fonseka, who was found guilty by a court martial of four charges related to alleged irregularities in military procurements during his tenure as Army Chief is currently serving a 30-month rigorous prison sentence.
The DNA leader lost his parliamentary seat due to the prison sentence.
Fonseka was deprived of his four-star general status by the first court martial against him for involving in politics while being an active military officer.
