Sri Lanka Navy came to the rescue of a distressed fishing boat with a critically ill crew member in the deep sea off the Eastern seaboard in the early hours of Thursday.
Sri Lanka Navy's Offshore Patrol Vessel SLNS Sayura has assisted the fishing boat "Supuni 3" which was partially submerged due to rough seas and strong winds at a location 106 nautical miles off Foul Point in Trincomalee district.
The fishing boat has left the Dondra Fisheries Harbour on 29th October 2010 with five crew members. It had got caught in the Jal Cyclonic Storm developed in the Bay of Bengal.
The naval medical personnel had taken the ill crew member on board the Navy vessel and later transferred him to the Trincomalee Base Hospital after providing emergency medical treatment.
The crew of the fishing boat had managed to revive the engines of the fishing trawler and bring it to the shore. The Navy has dispatched SLNS Sayura upon a request from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for assistance.
