Govt. Turned Into Hooligans To Attack Students - Udul Premaratne

Mr Udul Premaratne, Convener, Inter University Students' Federation said that the Government has turned into hooligans to attack students. Commenting on the incidents at Kelaniya University yesterday he said, 'the Government had obtained a Court order presenting false allegations against the students that they have damaged the hostels worth Rs 81,000, in order to remove them from the premises. We intend to take legal action regarding this matter against the Registrar of the University.


However, the students obeying the Court order vacated the hostels. Later Minister Mervin gripped his thugs to attack one student. We accept that students do things they ought not to. But the students in Universities are the children of our parents. How did they get licence to attack students on the road in front of Police and media? It is obvious that the ordinary people did not attack at Kelaniya but the same hooligans who attacked Sirasa led by Minister Mervin Silva', he said.

'The Government is in an attempt to deactivate the university system and create the atmosphere to set up private universities. But Lankan students' campaign has experience in facing worse challenges in history. We will take necessary steps to defeat this attempt of the Government congregating all forces to safeguard the free education for the sake of future generation', said Mr Premaratna.
