The Opposition has sought a CBI inquiry, saying Tamil Nadu Police will not be able to probe the case impartially.
Arumugam’s nephew Sureshkumar alias Parapatti Suresh, vice chairman of the Salem District Panchayat Union and the DMK secretary of Manamarathupatty Union, and two of his associates were arrested by the Crime Branch CID team investigating a case of multiple murders where a person surrendered after allegedly killing his family members including his parents.
Arriving from Chennai on Friday, two days after they were arrested, Arumugam went straight to the jail to visit his nephew. Sources said he had directed the police escort party at the airport not to accompany him. Suresh and his associates, Sampath, a lawyer, and Senthil were charged of planning the murders on August 12.
That night at Dasanaickenpatti village in Salem, one Sivaguru attacked and killed his father, retired sub-inspector Kuppuraj, mother Chandrammal, younger brother Rathinam, his wife Santhanalakshmi, their son Gouthaman and daughter Vigneshwari.
The incident was brought to light after Sivaguru surrendered before a court in Chennai the next day.
Though it is claimed that Arumugam went to the prison in his own capacity to visit his nephew whose guilt is yet to be established, it still has caused a stir.
At a function near Vellore, former union minister and the most vocal critic of the DMK, Congress leader EVKS Elangovan pointed out that the minister had gone there in his official car bearing beacon and flag, and criticised Arumugam for sending wrong signals to the investigating team. In a statement Wednesday, Opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa went a step ahead and demanded that the case be handed over from State Police CB-CID to the CBI, and sought the resignation of the minister whom she alleged broke his constitutional limits by calling on a man accused of such a charge.
