An unidentified person has threatened to detonate RDX bombs at the Tamil University in Thanjavur, the World Classical Tamil Conference venue in Coimbatore and the LIC office in Chennai. The threat came in the form of an inland letter on Tuesday addressed to the registrar of the Tamil University in Thanjavur.
Similar letters have also been sent to the World Classical Tamil Conference venue and to the LIC office in Chennai. All the three letters bear the same signature and they have been posted from the same post office in Pasupathikovil, police said.
Stating that he had been unfairly punished for a crime he had not committed, the writer questioned the necessity for conducting the World Classical Tamil Conference at a time when there are no jobs available in Tamil Nadu for those who had studied Tamil as major subject.
“The police department should disburse compensation to us. We condemn the police department,” the letter said. The letter also bore a signature in the name of Balusamy signed in English along with a mobile number. Investigations revealed that the number was genuine, that of 50-year-old plantain merchant K. Nagarajan of Therku Veedhi in Ayyampettai. He, however, denied having written the letter.
The letter received at the LIC office in Chennai bears the names of LIC agents Gandhimani and Subash besides other locals in Ayyampettai. Following the threat, three police teams from Thanjavur, Coimbatore and Chennai visited Ayyampettai and Pasupathikovil and conducted an enquiry. “The deputy registrar has lodged a complaint. We are investigating,” SP Dr Senthilvelan said.
