Sri Lanka's National Commission against Expansion of Illegal Small Firearms headed by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has found during a survey on illegal small fire arms that politicians are involved in the flow of illegal fire arms. The Commission's National Organizer Brigadier Ranjan P. C. De Silva has told the local media that the report has recommended the setting up of an independent commission, without the inclusion of any politician, enacted by an Act of Parliament to work towards eradicating illegal small fire arms.
The report had been handed over to Justice and Law Reforms Minister Athauda Seneviratne.
According to Brigadier De Silva, if the commission were to maintain international standards in eradicating illegal firearms, it should have sufficient powers to deal with the issue successfully.
It has also been recommended in the report to change the laws to minimize the usage of small fire arms.
