Sri Lanka's main opposition United National party is facing yet another controversy following a statement made by the party's Colombo District parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayaka during a meeting of the UNP's Kotte electoral committee. Karunanayaka addressing the gathering had reportedly asked the party leadership to stop the proposed party reforms form taking place.
The UNP MP had said that individuals for key posts in the party should be selected according to seniority and not through a secret ballot.
According to Karunanayaka, the party should cast aside the party reforms and focus attention on setting up a leadership council consisting of senior party members to lead the UNP.
Karunanayaka had then called on Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, who was also present at the occasion, not to give in to the requests of various party members.
He had also called on all party members to get together to build the party without creating divisions.
