Sri Lanka's main opposition to take action against party member for allegedly assaulting MP Range Bandara

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) will take disciplinary action against one of its provincial councilors who allegedly assaulted UNP Puttalam District parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara.
The UNP said its disciplinary committee will meet on Monday to discuss action to be taken against UNP North Western Provincial Councilor Shantha Abeysekara for allegedly attacking Range Bandara.

The party's Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya has been quoted in the local media saying that the disciplinary committee would review a response from Abeysekara after the party had called for an explanation of his involvement in the attack. Jayasuriya said his party would take appropriate action afterwards.
The UNP's decision has come after Range Bandara earlier in the week expressed his displeasure at the party and its leadership for not taking action against his assailants. Mr. Bandara said he would not participate in any party activities, including Working Committee meetings, until the party took action.
In response UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said after the 31st of May, a disciplinary committee will be appointed and an investigation will be conducted by the committee and reported to the Executive Committee.
Abeysekara and four others have allegedly attacked Range Bandara soon after the general elections in April.
