Sri Lanka's DNA wants to debate CEPA in Parliament

Sri Lanka's Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarians will request a parliamentary debate on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Sri Lanka and India.

DNA parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said he would table the request when Parliament meets on June 8.
The CEPA has been discussed between Sri Lanka and India since the 2008 South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Colombo but is yet to be signed.
The agreement has gathered opposition from many sections in Sri Lanka. A group of prominent Sri Lankan business entrepreneurs staged a protest earlier this week, urging the government not to sign the agreement as they said it was detrimental to Sri Lankas economy.
Some Sri Lankan groups argue that CEPA benefits India more than Sri Lanka and would adversely affect Sri Lankan businesses.
Sri Lankan businesses argue that the country cannot implement CEPA due to monitoring and regulatory inadequacies in the system.
